Fight Evil & Support Your Family in Children of Morta

How often do players have an in tact, happy, and most of all, living family in video games? I think I can count the amount of times on one hand. Games tend to motivate the main characters using the death of a family member or entire family, creating tales of anger and revenge. What if your whole family just didn’t appreciate the evil stalking their lands, though? You don’t need a loved one to die to want to stop corruption, do you? As such, Children of Morta tells a story of a family fighting against evil together, all while they face their own hopes and troubles at home.

Taking a page from Legacy of the Wizard, the entire Bergsons family gets in on the act of finding the source of an unknown corruption that has left the god of the mountain missing. All six members of the Bergsons family are playable, and each bring their own neat skills and powers to the roguelike dungeon crawling gameplay. They represent several playstyles, from ranged to melee, so there will likely be a family member who suits your own style best.

The most interesting part is that, between sections of action where you fight monsters in the mountain, you’ll return home. Spoils gained during combat can enhance the family members and their abilities when you’re home, but you will also get to see some small, tender moments between family members while there. Developer Dead Mage really wants the family’s interactions to be a large focus for the game in between combat, so a lot of work is going into the story. From the trailer, it seems that the happiness of the family’s relationship will be juxtaposed against the darkness and danger of the mountain, creating an interesting effect. Children of Morta is a roguelike, though, so will your own failures make the family fall apart? With a projected release date of sometime this year, we may find out soon.
