Combat Core Looks to Kickstart 4-Player Battle Royales

Passionate game designer Micah Betts is single-handedly working on the one video game that’s encapsulates his 15-year-old career: Combat Core is a four-player brawler that gives players more customization options than in similar games.

The game is in the style of Power Stone or Super Smash Bros.: Set in a futuristic arena, each player can customize and create his or her own fighter. Every combatant is distinguished in appearance and many parameters, such as size, speed, health, and recovery, as well as particular attacks and a special power core. The game utilizes a fairly straightforward control scheme, with movement options bound to an analog stick or WASD buttons, and an evasion skill. Other three buttons execute light, heavy, and core attacks, easily commanded by pressing or holding down a button briefly.

Also notable is a character’s energy meter, displayed in a circular ring at the feet. While it can be used for spectacular special attacks, guarding and shielding uses the meter it as well. The fighters have three lives in the arena and must duke it out under a timer. If the timer reaches zero, death lasers spawn, slowly forcing the players to move to the center stage or avoid certain death, Hunger Games-style.

The core of the game is basically finished, and the developer is looking for Kickstarter support in areas such as producing more content, marketing and events, software licenses, and fostering a community. First, the game will be released as an OUYA exclusive, participating in the #FreeTheGamesFund program, but Windows and Mac versions will be available as well.

Pledging as little as $9 grants early access to a build of the game, as soon as it’s available (estimated for January 2015). Check out the details regarding Combat Core on its Kickstarter campaign page, and be sure to follow IGM for more exciting details on this project as they arise.
