Try To Survive The Wilderness In ‘Don’t Starve’

There’s something about trying to survive a dangerous situation that video games revel in. Whether it’s an alien invasion, or a robot invasion, or a dust invasion. Seriously I need to clean this room.

Anyway, where was I? Right, survival. That’s exactly what Don’t Starve is all about, though under more drastic circumstances. Poor Wilson has been thrown in the deep end by a demon, sending him to a mysterious world full of dangerous creatures. The only choice he has is to fight for his life in any way possible, using the environment to craft items and buildings to defend yourself with.

The environment does play a big part, not only in becoming a tool of destruction but also a hive mind of creative ways to survive whatever the randomly generated world throw at you. You’ll fight using whatever tools you can craft, like building fire to take down the most dangerous critters or creating a sharp weapons from fallen trees. But there’s no instructions here, you’ll have to come up with the answers yourself instead of relying on an in game hint system.

If you hadn’t seen the game before, you’d be forgiven for thinking this is a third person action adventure, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Don’t Starve seems more like something from the mind of Tim Burton, with its cooky animation and musical score, than a modern action game. There are plenty of quirky moments, such as giant pig like creatures dancing around an open fire or a tree coming to life to attack you, that lends Don’t Starve its own sense of odd mystery and excitement.

Klei Entertainment are no strangers to quirky games either. Their previous titles N+ and Shank provided plenty of original and unusual moments, so you could say a survival horror style genre is perfectly suited to their creative output.

Don’t Starve is currently in an early access beta phase, which you can join via the official website or via Steam. The good news is, if you’ve previously purchased the game from Klei, you can redeem a Steam code to add it to your PC library. Otherwise you can play it online, but you’ll need a Google Chrome browser to do so.
