Papetura Turns Paper into a Point-and-Click Adventure

We’ve seen crafts occasionally cross into digital media, but one indie game studio is taking paper crafts to the next level. Papetura draws from stop-motion movies and similarly produced games to create a point-and-click adventure.

Papetura examines the delicate, natural state of paper, which is easily moldable into pretty much anything. The game has you playing as Pape, the main character, traveling together and protecting his smaller friend, Tura. At the start, the duo gets swallowed by a whale-like creature, but that’s just the setup for the paper-made environments. “When the paper-world is awoken by the light, you will discover its secrets and threats,” the game’s story description says.

The gameplay revolves around solving puzzles and interacting with the setting — everything can be used in some way as the character’s progress further along in their quest.

Tomasz Ostafin heads the small Polish studio, Petums, which has so far dabbled in flash games. Papetura was partially inspired by Ostafin’s architecture project titled “Architecture as Game.” To bring the paper world to life, the studio arranges a photo scene with lighting, takes one good shot, then digitally transfers and codes it into the project.

Petums is looking to share Papetura in the middle of 2016 for PC, Mac, Linux, and possibly the iPad. A lot depends on their upcoming crowdfunding campaign, which is set to launch in the beginning of 2015. Check out Papetura‘s website for a few more details on the game, and look back to IGM for future updates.
