Ape Out
Ape Out, An Indie Game Developed by Gabe Cuzillo, Released for Microsoft Windows and Nintendo Switch in 2019
Ape Out is a single-player combat game that is played from a top-down perspective, which allows the player to observe all aspects of the game.
The concept of Ape Out is quite simple. It involves the player to assume the role of an ape and gun-down and attack enemies while escaping out of a maze. The human enemies involved in the game are easy to kill in just one shot, and can also be used as a shield to protect the ape from other gun-wielding individuals. The aim of the game is to quickly escape from the maze, and the killing of enemies is not entirely necessary unless it is to protect itself from a gunshot.

Ape Out has a focused yet interesting gameplay
The game revolves around the need for the ape to escape the maze while evading or attacking enemies to move further. With the push of a single button, the player can grab characters and shove them away from the path. The ape can use its fists to fight out of the different locations it is put in, which includes – laboratories, military bases, ships, estates, and much more.
The player will not be able to pick up the guns directly, as the actual power is given to the ape’s physical combat ability, as well as its mental ability to escape the confinement. Nevertheless, the ape can pick up gun-wielding enemies and aim their weapons to shoot their friends. The ape can also pick up a human and use them as a shield to protect itself from other shooting humans. The ape can live with a total of three gunshots before it dies.
An easy yet very intriguing concept
The fascinating factor about Ape Out is that it lacks the intense storyline or captivating sceneries, but still manages to be one of the most fun games to play. The entire concept of the game is very efficiently communicated to the player. To put it in simple terms, the ape is trapped but is very powerful. The enemies are several but are weak. The color palette is simple and easy to follow, and the background music in the game is also altered to fit the player’s current performance. This makes the player focus on the actions and, ultimately, finish the game without the need for any niceties.
Every kill in the game is accompanied by a loud cymbal sound, and it pushes a sense of urgency to escape the maze before the enemies get to the player. The music works in sync with the screen, which shakes to indicate any kills or shots fired at the ape. Every single attack within the game has a sense of weight and power, making you experience the game for its entire duration.
With regards to the enemies, they have been built as simple and unintelligent creatures – almost robots, if you will. During the course of the game as well, the enemies make very predictable actions, as their primary aim is to just prevent the ape from escaping. The enemies will spot the ape, and fire from a distance. These predictable actions make it easy for the player to know how to tackle the enemy and focus on escaping the maze as quickly as possible.
The perfect game for an adrenaline rush
Ape Out is a game that wants the player to truly feel the acceleration of the characters on the screen. The game is a fast-paced one and relies on the player’s instincts as much as it does on its simple yet effective concept. The game can be described as the perfect setting for a person looking to indulge in pure-combat, while still focusing on a given strategy. The setting of the game, in terms of visual appeal and soundtrack, allows a player to feel fully immersed in the screen. The sound is fast and loud, lending a sense of rapidness to the overall pace of the play. The game is not easy; the chances of dying quickly into the game are very high, but jumping back in is fast and easy. This very aspect of the game makes it interesting and worthy of a long-term commitment.
