Venture Into the Winter Wonderland Of ‘Marvin’s Mittens’

Every once in a while, a game comes along that reminds you that it’s the simple things that go a long way. Marvin’s Mittens, the debut title from Canadian studio Breakfall, follows that ideal to the letter in its cute and cuddly story of Marvin’s winter adventure.

Marvin’s Mittens is a 2D platformer that focuses on providing a stress free and enjoyable experience for all ages. The only story you need to worry about is Marvin’s mitten, which have been stolen and resides somewhere outside. You’ll be collecting snow flakes around the environment that can increase your jumping ability as you explore the winter setting until your mother calls you back home.

The aim of the game for Breakfall was to create something that didn’t involve the typical mechanics of other platform games. In other words there are no typical objectives, combat or enemies in the game, though that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do. In fact there’s more than enough to keep you going.

You start out from your home during the day on your toboggan collecting as many snow flakes as you can, learning from the snow elves who impart magical secrets to you in the hope it can aid you in finding your lost mitten. There’s no time clock here, though as day changes to night your mum will call out to Marvin to bring him home. You’ll return before setting back out the next day, a handy mechanic if you get lost and want to start over without tracking all the way back.

Marvin also has a sketchbook with which he can keep a track of the areas he has explored or draw some of the wildlife he may come across. There’s also some hidden items dotted around the landscape that will surely have you revisiting areas and, as your jump improves, you’ll be able to reach previously hard to access areas for even more treasure hunting.

The story may be simple, but the presentation is far from it. Marvin’s Mittens has been hand drawn in 2D, giving it a very dreamscape like vibe with some beautiful scenery that captures the essence of what it means to be a child within a magical world. It’s very beautiful to watch Marvin in action, and if you don’t believe me have a closer look at the preview video. It really is great to watch in motion.
