Indie Intermission Day 2 – ‘Perpetua’

Today I have stumbled across yet another Ludum Dare entry this time for the theme of “contrast”. Ludum Dare really is a great venture allowing budding indie devs to showcase their ability and unique stylings and often zany ideas. Perpetua is a puzzle game which warns you from the get go once you accept to play the game you will not be able to back out, which is very true as this game seems to take over your computer, in a good way of course.

Perpetua is only comprised of two puzzles, the first of which requires a set of key presses in the correct order and although looking back on it the sequence seems all too simple trying to get to that point can be amusingly frustrating. Though even when you figure out the puzzle (don’t worry everyone does.. eventually) there is another stage which is where the second puzzle comes in as it consists of an interesting boss battle which again requires the player to think with his head.

Perpetua seems to be going with a retro vibe in terms of the graphics styling which suits the games overall style quite nicely along with the numerous comments from the sinister Mr Ben styled gentleman giving quite an unnerving feel to the game, which is very fitting as you have been trapped in this place. The completion time for this game is very short if you are lucky enough to figure out the button combination and boss battle however for most people I would expect this game to take up to an hour to figure out all the concepts.

If your into your puzzlers then this game is a must play, it is short sweet and although quite limited, for a one time play this is greatly frustrating and it explores other ways for puzzlers to interact with PC users that are not always conventional.

Time to complete – Less than one hour

Perpetua is a game designed by Daniël Haazen a game developer from the Netherland with several quirky games available from his website.
