‘Oberon’s Court’ Through The Fire And Flames
Strategy games have always been my favourite genre, ever since the early days of computing. Playing as a military leader has always seemed much more appealing to me than just a grunt on the ground, and with a much wider scope who could really blame me.
Having a bit of a resurgence this year the humble strategy market has grown significantly larger in the turn based market, however with games like Frozen Hearth coming out there has been some notable RTS games to.
Although still in the early stages of development Little Chicken Game Company has been working on a new RTS that goes by the name of Oberon’s Court. It’s a RTS using a hexagonal tile set to help implement simplistic controls. Although don’t worry as this will not create a basic or easy game, but allow a more broad access point for new gamers.
Oberon’s Court will take advantage of the latest AI pathfinding and gameplay elements such as supply lines and alchemy. In an interesting turn of events you are able to create units and variants by mixing resources found in the tiles.
The idea is to allow the players to really vary the game and create an ever evolving and changing gameplay. It sounds a very exciting proposition albeit one hell of a task to try and balance – which is my only real concern here.
Oberon’s Court is going to embrace the fantasy theme, however it will go about it in an ultra stylized manner that does look very nice and seems to take a cell shaded approach. Little Chicken Game Company seem to be aiming to create the visuals entirely out of geometry and shaders, meaning no textures which is an interesting route and will help limit the size of game files greatly.
It really looks and sounds to be a very interesting project and one that will hopefully birth a new ultra stylized RTS game. Although still in the very early stages this will be one game to watch as we enter the new year.
If Oberon’s Court sounds like good fun to you be sure to check out the Steam Greenlight page here and up-vote.
