Fans of string quartets and game soundtracks will find just what they are looking for with The String Arcade which, thanks to a successfully funded Kickstarter Campaign, will release an album on February 11th.
Featuring music spanning decades of video games, the CD release contains string renditions of games as old as the Legend of Zelda (NES), Galaga, and Ecco the Dolphin. Rounding out the collection are tracks from modern hits like Plants vs. Zombies, Portal 2, and FTL: Faster than Light. Mobile titles graBLOX, Pettington Park, and Ravenshire Castle are also included. Each piece is creatively reworked to make it fit for a string quartet, rather than just converted. Have a listen to the following preview track:
The leader of the quarter, Dren McDonald, runs his own company called nerdtrack. He has contributed music and sound to numerous video games, including the mobile titles mentioned above, as well as Skulls of the Shogun and Ghost Recon Commander.
The String Arcade can be pre-ordered at iTunes for the early-bird discounted price of $7.99, or you can get two bonus tracks if you pre-order at BandCamp for $9.99. As previously mentioned, the record will release February 11, and any launch or post-release purchases will run the full price of $11.00. All proceeds will be donated to the Alameda Music Project, a tuition-free, K-5 after school music program focusing on strings, percussion and chorus focused in Alameda, CA.
