Recently the highly rated arena platformer from Everplay, Spell Sword, received a huge update that has transformed the game into a free-to-play model. That’s not all though, as the game is adding more content to an already great platformer.
Spell Sword now has a brand new arena called Sky Temple which comes with 60 missions. The update also includes 30 new shop items, new Spell cards, and new enemies. Users who own both the iPhone and iPad will also be happy to hear that the game now has iCloud support.
In our review of Spell Sword we praised the amount of content it came with while sticking to the low price of $0.99. Back when the game released you couldn’t purchase Rupees and Dragon Coins with real money. That seems to be the main change in Spell Sword now that is has gone to the free-to-play business model. Thankfully, the game seems to be the same outside of this added feature. You can still play the game how you usually would without feeling like you have to pay to make any progress.
Overall, I welcome the transition to the free-to-play model and I think it’s a great financial choice for an independent developer. Adding in free content for people who have already paid for the game and switching to a free-to-play business model to attract new customers will insure they make the most out of their game and give them enough financial backing to keep bringing us great forms of entertainment.
