Saturday Spotlight – Mahjong Quest (GameTop)

Saturday Spotlight is a promotional series that offers publishers and game hosting sites the opportunity to have one of their games mentioned in a news post on Indie Game Magazine. Each post is sponsored by the publisher mentioned in the headline and as part of the article’s outro.

Mahjong has a rather straightforward history. Which makes it all the more interesting that so many variants invent lore and narrative to accompany the experience. The reasoning makes sense, using plot to make each individual game feel different from the rest, but how high can the stakes ever truly be during a game of Mahjong?

Mahjong Quest answers that very question. Three dragons suddenly appear in the land, and it’s up to a character named Kwazi to stop them from wreaking havoc. There story mode even includes brief cutscenes between puzzles to explain what’s happening in the narrative. (There is no dialogue, but minor sound effects and music are included.)

The game features three modes of play: Classic, where players can choose from over 80 traditional layouts; Puzzle, which boasts “intriguing layouts with a twist,” and Kwazi’s quest, where players can utilize magic tiles to solve layouts and restore balance to the empire.

Mahjong Quest is available as a free download for Windows PC. It requires a 9MB install.

Cheers, interested to see how it compares to a long-time favourite, namely Kyodai.
    Lovely bit of highlighting :)
