The wonderful world of cyberpunk and fantasy is returning in Harebrained Schemes‘ Shadowrun Returns. Today they released their first gameplay walkthrough, which goes through twenty minutes of a side-mission in a secret laboratory and the Pike Place Public Market of Seattle in 2054.
In the video you can see how the world seamlessly transitions from real-time exploration to turn-based combat. The variety of abilities and character stats we see in this short side-mission reveal that Shadowrun Returns is indeed shaping up to be the game that we’ve been promised.
The isometric environments are beautifully rendered with enough details to give the game a vibrant character of its own, and enough implicit visual feedback to convey the scene through words. This is especially important for a system built off of a pen-and-paper RPG that carries the expectation of being accessible enough for players to use the mission creation tools to create their own stories.
It seems that everything is coming together at Harebrained Schemes and I can’t wait to get my hands on the game editor myself. You can follow development of Shadowrun Returns on the official website. “When in doubt, always shoot. Conserve ammo. And never cut a deal with a dragon.”
