Jack Sharp is a cowboy adventurer, but he isn’t exactly situated in the Wild West. The planet K’Tharsis, which saw its own version of the Gold Rush, is a strange land filled with dangers and inhabitants who have abandoned hope. That’s the setting for Exoplanet: First Contact, an RPG from Alersteam that is currently on Kickstarter.
The studio is looking to a few big names for inspiration: Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Fallout, Gothic, and the sci-fi TV show Firefly. Their space Western, however, is an original story which follows Sharp on a quest to retrieve his spaceship, Betty. Betty was stolen, and Sharp ended up stuck on K’Tharsis, a former mine colony that specialized in mining a valuable mineral called Antigravium.
Exoplanet gives the player freedom to develop Sharp in a few ways, with a variety of classes. The gameplay is a mix of shooting and RPG, so there are a number of guns to choose from, in addition to melee weapons. K’Tharsis is full of dangerous creatures, but Sharp can craft many useful things to keep the baddies out, like fences, turrets, and equipment. There’s also an option to turn on a few survival mechanics, such as the need for food and water. Ultimately, Sharp’s actions can influence the environment in a variety of ways; entire towns could disappear, or new opportunities can be revealed.
The Kickstarter aims to build up a community and draw some funds for the series. Alersteam want to build long-term engagement, as they’d like to release Exoplanet in chapters. Alongside the final chapter, they want to release a modkit for their in-house Sahara Engine, which will give players the opportunity to create their own adventures and modifications.
The game will be developed for Windows first, with other platforms, like Mac, Linux, and SteamOS, dependent on fan support.
Pledging at least $15 secures a DRM-free version after release as well as a Steam key for the Early Access release. Its estimated delivery date is March 2016. Check out the Kickstarter campaign page for many more details about the space Western. Exoplanet has also been Greenlit.
