Ex-Bioshock Devs Kickstarting The Black Glove

One of the first things on The Black Glove‘s Kickstarter page is the question “What is The Black Glove?”, and that’s a pretty good one to ask. Created by a handful of the talented people who left Irrational Games when they dissolved a while ago, it’s kind of hard to tell what the game is at a glance. Taking place in a bizarre theatre filled with even stranger in-house artists, the game asks players to perform feats of skill in order to change the past of those artists. In doing so, you will change their currently-stagnant artwork, for better or worse.



The Black Glove puts players in a sealed theatre with the three artists living there: A filmmaker, a musician, and an artist. Each will have their own current work, which is likely less than impressive. To make their work better, players may have to do something like play an arcade game in order to gain access to a special glove that will let the player make a change for that artist that will then improve their abilities. As an example, if you want to make the artist improve her sculpting using paint or photography, you will need to beat an arcade game called “The Maze of the Space Minotaur” to do so. Doing well at this game gives players access to the Black Glove, which lets them make that change in the artist’s life. It also puts the player directly in charge of how the plot plays out, as the player can choose one of several directions to take the artist’s work in.


Day for Night Games The Black Glove is looking to create an odd mixture of story and gameplay, tying them together by making the player perform well in order to have the option to move the story forward. While offering an interesting setting and game in and of itself, the game feels like it’s more of a commentary on modern game design and storytelling, as in how we, as players, must shoot a certain amount of guys or finish a puzzle in order to get to the next piece of plot. It’s an intriguing project as a weird game, but I’m most interested in what these industry veterans have to say about modern game narrative using this game.
