Update: A Rite from the Stars Kickstarter is now live! Visit here!
The stars have chosen you, well, Kirm – a mute boy from the Makoa Tribe, on the island of Kaikala – to become a legend among your peers. But it won’t be easy. First, you’ll have to master three paths before you can leave your childhood behind: Wisdom, courage, and spirit.
A Rite from the Stars by Risin’ Goat is a modern take on the nostalgic genre of point-and-click graphic adventure games. The developers are working at making the game free of the many cliches the graphic adventure game genre has coined over the years, such as pixel hunting, pointless walks, and a cluttered inventory. Adventure games have the reputation for being very story oriented games, with dialogue being traditionally what drives them, but the developers chose for Kirm to be a mute, which makes way for what can be a really unique approach to narrative. Unlike other point-and-click adventure games, you do not have an inventory, you instead carry the items you interact with, giving a unique and fresh approach to solving puzzles.
The three paths of wisdom, courage, and spirit do not have to be done in any particular order; in any case, each one features a unique special mechanic and poses different kinds of challenges.
The game features a very tribal, Aztec art influence in its architecture and character design. It’s also refreshing to find a point-and-click adventure game that features full 3D character models and environments, in comparison to most games in the genre that are made up of pre-rendered environments and characters.
A Rite from the Stars is gearing up to launch a Kickstarter soon, and is currently on Steam Greenlight. You can vote for the game on Steam here. It is set to be released for PC, Mac, and Linux, with Ouya and Wii U ports expected in the future.
