Grundislav Games and Wadjet Eye Games have announced their period piece game, A Golden Wake – a point-and-click adventure about the booming 20’s, real estate, and the mob. You play as Alfie Banks, a real estate agent who’s moved to Miami, Florida, hoping to strike it rich with the exploding market of the 20’s. Furthermore, where there is money and success, there is bound to be crime and corruption. The mob wants in on the same market you’re in, and to make matters worse, the great depression is just around the corner.
A Golden Wake looks like to be straight out of an early 90’s LucasArts catalogue of adventure games. The pixel art of the characters in front of the hand painted backgrounds is so reminiscent that it can easily be mistaken for a lost game of the time period.
Traditionally, most crime stories of the 20’s and 30’s took place in California, more specifically in Los Angeles. This time period of crime sparked inspiration for what would be an endless amount of literature and films – The Big Sleep and Chinatown, to name a couple. Heck, even the more recent L.A. Noire. What separates A Golden Wake from the other crime-inspired works of fiction is that they chose to set the game in a real-life location, Coral Gables of Miami – a not-so-covered area of the time period.
